A septic system in Greenville County can't be built until SCDES issues a Permit to Construct, and the process starts with an onsite wastewater application and site evaluation. The application fee was $150 as of July 2026. The evaluation checks the soil, landscape, setbacks, and bedroom count to determine whether the site is suitable and what septic system layout can be permitted. South Carolina's sizing rule calls for a 1,000-gallon tank for homes with up to four bedrooms and adds 250 gallons for each bedroom beyond that. In our experience, a straightforward permit often takes about 1.5 to 3 weeks, although weather, soil conditions, or a more complex site can extend that timeline. Installation comes after the Permit to Construct is issued, followed by inspection and approval before the system can be put into use.

Rock Solid Excavation handles new septic installations from our Greenville office at 1200 Woodruff Rd, Building A3. In most projects, the homeowner or builder already has the permit before we begin, but we can also help with the permitting process when needed. Our work can include perc or soil testing, excavation, tank and drain field installation, the required inspection, backfilling after approval, and restoration of the disturbed area. The goal is to install the permitted system correctly the first time, so you are not paying later to correct avoidable installation problems. New septic installations are backed by our 1-year warranty.

OUR PROJECTS

On July 21, 2026, Alex Rusev installed a conventional gravity septic system on Simms School Road in Central, SC, for a local home builder we've worked with for years. The system went in before the house did. That order matters because it keeps construction traffic from compacting the drainfield soil.

The job included a 1,000-gallon tank, a gravel drainfield with level aggregate trenches and four-inch perforated pipe, and geotextile fabric to keep backfill from washing into the stone. Alex set 14 inches of approved aggregate in each trench, with 7 inches below the pipe, 4 beside it, and 3 above. The system passed its final inspection before backfill, and it needs an Approval to Operate before anyone turns it on. The whole job cost $6,850 as of that date, paid by check. You can read the full story of this septic install done before the house was built in Central on our projects page.

Trusted Septic System Installations for Homes and Businesses

Building a home in Greenville or expanding a business in Greer requires a professional septic system installation. Your septic system is out of sight most of the time, and it's still one of the most important parts of your project. We handle both residential and commercial installations, and we know that no two properties are the same. Greenville sits in Greenville County, and our crew also works in Spartanburg, Cherokee, Pickens, and Anderson Counties.

We focus on proper sizing, correct placement, and long-term reliability. Every system we install is built to SCDES requirements under Regulation R.61-56, and each one is designed around your property's layout, usage, and soil. Residential tanks start at 1,000 gallons, and about 80% of the septic homes we work on use one. Homes beyond four bedrooms can need more, so the bedroom count on the application has to be accurate.

When you hire an installer who knows Greenville's soil, you end up with a system that works quietly in the background, exactly how it should.

Complete Septic Installation Services in Greenville, SC

A full septic tank installation covers more than setting a tank in the ground. Our technicians handle the soil evaluation, permitting, excavation, tank and drain field installation, and final site restoration. We also coordinate the system design with the right licensed professional for your property. If an existing septic system needs to come out first, decommissioning it and getting the old tank pumped is part of the same job.

Steps for Installing a Septic System

For an installation, we visit the property, evaluate the job, and put together a quote. If you approve the price, we send a contract that spells out what we're responsible for, what falls outside our scope, how payment works, and what to expect. Both sides sign before anything gets ordered, and we order materials shortly before your install date. From there the work runs in five steps.
Site Evaluation, Septic Tank Sizing, and Bedroom Count
We test the soil and coordinate a design that meets R.61-56 and fits the property's layout and bedroom count. South Carolina requires at least a 1,000-gallon tank for homes with up to four bedrooms, with another 250 gallons required for each additional bedroom. That means a 1,500-gallon tank meets the minimum tank-capacity requirement for a six-bedroom home. When the site needs an engineered system, we bring in a licensed engineer.
Permitting and Homeowner Installation Rules
Septic applications for Greenville County properties go through SCDES, and we handle the submission so nothing gets missed. Most of our installs arrive with the permit already in hand from the homeowner or builder, and a typical permit takes about 1.5 to 3 weeks. South Carolina also allows a homeowner to construct or repair an onsite wastewater system for personal use at their own residence without an installer license. That exception does not remove the site evaluation, permit, inspection, or approval requirements.
Precise Excavation
Some site preparation, like clearing and staging, can start before the Permit to Construct is issued. Actual system construction waits until the permit is in hand. Before we dig, we photograph the yard so its condition is on record, and our crew works around existing structures and landscaping where possible.
Tank and Drain Field Installation
Every component is installed to exact specifications and checked against the approved design. We measure and level the tank before backfill.
Inspection and Restoration
Once the system passes final inspection, we backfill, restore the site, and take after photos. Final payment comes after the inspection. New installations carry a 1-year warranty.

Permits and Compliance

Installation in Greenville County falls under SCDES, which took over septic permitting from DHEC in July 2024, and Regulation R.61-56. A Permit to Construct is required before system construction begins, and as of July 2026, the site evaluation fee is $150. The system has to pass a final inspection before it can be used. We manage that process, so the property owner doesn't have to chase it down. The SCDES permit process lays out the steps.

Equipment and Methods We Use

Setting a tank and connecting a drain field are excavation work first. Our crew brings excavation equipment sized to the job, from a single residential lot to a larger commercial site, along with our pump truck for an old tank that needs to be pumped or decommissioned during the same visit. We handle site restoration so the property doesn't look like a construction zone once we're done.

How Much Does Septic Tank Installation Cost in the Greenville Area?

Septic installation cost in the Greenville area depends on the site, soil, system design, and access, so there isn't one flat price for every property. Soil type decides how much excavation the site needs, and access and distance from the road add to it. An old system that needs decommissioning adds a step. If the soil calls for an engineered design in place of a conventional drain field, the system costs roughly three to four times as much.
For reference, the conventional 1,000-gallon system we installed in Central on July 21, 2026, cost $6,850. We give a written estimate once we've seen the site.
Once the job is complete, we walk you through everything and make sure all your questions are answered.
Final Walkthrough

We remain available for future maintenance or questions. South Carolina DES generally recommends septic inspections every one to two years and pumping every three to five years, depending on tank size and household use. We follow up after the final inspection to make sure you're satisfied, and we send a reminder around the three-year mark so the next pump-out doesn't get forgotten.

Common Reasons for New Septic Installation in Greenville, SC

A new septic installation usually comes down to one of a few situations. New construction without sewer access needs a permitted system, and an addition or change in use may require the existing system to be reevaluated or expanded. Replacement may also be necessary when a tank is structurally unsound or a drain field has failed beyond practical repair. Adding bedrooms or converting space into bedrooms can also push a home beyond what the existing septic system was designed to serve. A property sale can bring these problems to light if an inspection finds a system that needs repair or replacement before the transaction can move forward.

Installation is different from repair. If your system isn't working properly but the tank and drain field are still repairable, troubleshooting or a repair visit is usually the better place to start. A full replacement may not be necessary. We'll tell you which situation applies once we've inspected the property.
