How a Septic Tank Works in Upstate South Carolina

South Carolina received 17,336 applications for individual septic systems in 2023-2024, up 132% from 7,456 in 2010-2011. About 30% of households in the state rely on septic systems instead of a public sewer (SCDES). Across Upstate South Carolina, that includes properties throughout Spartanburg, Greenville, Cherokee, Pickens, and Anderson counties.
Based on the EPA estimate of almost 70 gallons of indoor water use per person per day, a family of four may send nearly 280 gallons of wastewater into its septic system each day. Most of that movement happens underground, so homeowners may not see a problem until drains slow down or the ground above the system turns wet.

What Is a Septic Tank?

A septic tank is an underground, watertight container that provides the first stage of wastewater treatment. Wastewater enters from the house. Heavy solids settle at the bottom as sludge, while oils, grease, and other light materials form a scum layer at the surface. The liquid between them then moves toward the drainfield.

The drainfield, also called a leach field, handles the next stage of treatment. It spreads the liquid through perforated pipes and allows it to filter slowly through unsaturated soil. The tank and drainfield work together, but they perform different jobs.

Residential septic tanks are commonly made of concrete, fiberglass, or durable plastic. The correct tank size and system layout depend on the property, wastewater load, soil conditions, and the approved permit.

The tank is only one part of a septic installation. A full system also includes soil evaluation, permitting, excavation, drainfield installation, pipe runs, gravel or chamber materials, labor, equipment, inspections, and final backfill.

Tank Body

The tank body holds wastewater during the separation process. It is usually made from concrete or durable plastic and may contain one or two chambers.

Inlet Pipe and Baffle

The inlet pipe carries wastewater from the house into the tank. An inlet baffle directs the flow downward and prevents it from disturbing the waste already inside.

Waste Layers

Heavy solids settle at the bottom and form sludge. Oils and other light materials rise to the surface and create a scum layer. Liquid effluent remains between these layers.

Outlet Baffle and Filter

The outlet baffle keeps sludge and floating waste inside the tank. Many tanks also have an effluent filter that catches small particles before the liquid leaves for the drainfield.

Septic Tank Safety

Never enter a septic tank or lean over an open access point. Toxic gases can cause loss of consciousness, and an unsecured lid creates a serious fall hazard. Internal inspections and work inside the tank or pump chamber should be left to trained professionals.

How Does a Septic Tank System Work?

A septic tank is the first component of an onsite wastewater treatment system for a property that is not connected to a municipal sewer. Unlike a sewage treatment plant, this onsite system treats wastewater on the property where it is generated. Household wastewater flows through the main drainpipe into a buried, watertight tank. The tank holds the wastewater long enough for solids to settle at the bottom and lighter materials to rise to the surface.

Heavy solids settle at the bottom and form a sludge layer. Oils and other light materials rise to the surface and create scum. The liquid between these layers is called effluent.

Anaerobic bacteria inside the tank break down part of the organic matter without oxygen. This process reduces some of the solid material, but it does not fully clean the wastewater. Sludge continues to collect at the bottom and must be removed during septic pumping.
Baffles or a T-shaped outlet keep sludge and scum inside the tank. Some systems also use an effluent filter to catch smaller particles. The partially treated liquid then leaves the tank for controlled discharge into the drainfield.

A two-chamber septic tank adds another settling stage. Effluent moves from the first chamber into the second, allowing more suspended material to separate before the liquid exits. The wastewater still requires further treatment after leaving the tank. Some alternative treatment systems introduce oxygen to support aerobic bacteria. Other specialized designs may use sand filters or constructed wetlands, but these are not standard components of a conventional septic system.

The drainfield receives the effluent through a network of perforated pipes. These pipes spread the liquid across an area of unsaturated soil. The effluent then begins to percolate through the ground, where the soil filters it and microorganisms break down remaining contaminants.

The soil completes most of the treatment that the septic tank begins. It helps reduce bacterial contamination and lowers the risk that pathogens, including viruses, will reach groundwater. A conventional septic system therefore depends on both the tank and the drainfield working together.
Too much wastewater can overload the drainfield. The soil may stop accepting liquid fast enough, which can lead to wet ground or sewage backups inside the home. Regular septic pumping keeps excess solids from reaching the drainfield, but pumping is not a cure for every backup.

When I arrive at a property, I want to see the liquid level before we remove anything. That level can show whether the tank is simply due for service or whether something is preventing wastewater from leaving it. A tank can be pumped and still have a blocked outlet, a pump problem, or a drainfield that is no longer accepting water. When the cause is not clear, the next step is septic system troubleshooting, not another blind pump-out.

Common Issues in Septic Systems

Septic system problems often begin with poor flow, excess water, or missed maintenance. Small issues can spread through the tank and drainfield, leading to sewage backups or damage around the property:

  • Clogs can form when wipes, diapers, or other non-biodegradable items enter the system. Grease can also build up inside pipes and filters.
  • Excessive water use can shorten settling time inside the tank and, more importantly, hydraulically overload the drainfield. If the soil cannot accept effluent as quickly as it arrives, wastewater may surface outdoors or back up into the home.
  • Sludge and scum continue to collect inside the tank. Missed pumping increases the risk of solids reaching the outlet filter and drainfield.
  • Tree roots may enter damaged pipes while searching for moisture. They can restrict wastewater flow and create leaks over time.
  • A saturated drainfield cannot absorb effluent properly. Standing water, muddy ground, or sewage odors may appear near the tank or drainfield.
  • Age and pressure from shifting soil or heavy equipment can damage the tank or distribution box, especially when the system was installed incorrectly. A leaking tank may release wastewater or allow groundwater to enter. Damage to the distribution box can overload one section of the drainfield.

A professional septic inspection can identify these problems before they cause a complete system failure. It can also show when a recent pump-out treated the symptom without finding the cause.

We saw that on a Greenville property in June 2026. The homeowner had paid another contractor to pump the tank six months earlier, but the backup returned. Our crew checked both tanks before removing any wastewater. The septic tank was above its normal operating level, while the pump tank remained at a normal level. The Greenville County case showed that the outlet pipe between the tanks was not passing flow.

The previous pump-out had made the problem disappear for a while. It had not fixed the blocked connection. That is why we check how wastewater is moving through the system instead of assuming every backup has the same cause.

Signs of a Failing Septic System

A failing septic system often gives warning signs before a complete breakdown. Some symptoms point to excessive solids or restricted flow, while others may indicate drainfield failure. Quick action can reduce property damage and limit health risks.
One slow sink does not always mean the septic system is failing. Several slow fixtures, outdoor wastewater, or a sewage backup require much faster action. A professional inspection can identify whether the problem comes from the tank, the pipes, or the drainfield.

A warning sign also does not always mean the entire system has failed. An Inman homeowner called us after the septic alarm came on. We opened the pump chamber and found that the floats were positioned incorrectly. The team adjusted them, tested the pump, and restored normal operation during the same visit. Septic System Care and Maintenance

Regular care helps protect the septic tank and drainfield from overload. This is especially important in Upstate South Carolina, where clay-heavy soil can stay wet after periods of heavy rain. A drainfield that is already under stress has less room to accept household wastewater when the surrounding ground is saturated.

Do’s:
  • Know the location and capacity of your septic system.
  • Schedule a professional septic inspection every one to two years.
  • Schedule septic tank pumping every three to five years, or sooner when an inspection shows that solids are approaching the outlet.
  • Keep records of inspections and pumping.
  • Repair leaking toilets and faucets quickly.
  • Use water-saving fixtures to reduce the daily flow into the system.
  • Grow grass over the drainfield.
  • Direct roof drainage and surface water away from the drainfield.
  • Have pumps, floats, alarms, and electrical controls professionally inspected at least once a year or as required by the system manufacturer.

Don’ts:
  • Do not flush wipes or other non-biodegradable waste.
  • Do not pour grease into the drains.
  • Do not send large amounts of water into the system at once.
  • Do not overuse strong household chemicals.
  • Do not pour solvents or pesticides into the system.
  • Do not plant trees near the drainfield.
  • Do not drive or park over the septic tank or drainfield.
  • Do not connect sump pumps or roof drains to the septic system.
  • Do not rely on a garbage disposal without considering the extra solid waste it adds.

Routine pumping lowers the risk of solids reaching the drainfield. It cannot restore a field that is hydraulically overloaded or already failing.
